Un profesor savant pleaca in Islanda cu nepotul sau Sean, pentru a afla ce s-a intamplat cu fratele sau disparut. In expeditiile lor descopera o pestera care ii duce in adancul planetei. Alaturi de ghida lor montana, cei doi descopera in centrul Pamantului o lume pierduta fantastica si periculoasa, plina de creaturi terifiante si peisaje ciudate.
